reviewer:wiley L. Fowler, M.d., M.s.(washington University School Of Medicine)
description:this Comprehensive Atlas Of Pelvic Surgery Consists Of More Than 1,950 Illustrations And Photographs Covering Pelvic Anatomy And Gynecologic Pelvic Surgery. The First Edition Was Published In 2001.
purpose:the Authors' Purpose In Compiling This Atlas Was To Provide Precise Demonstrations Of True Anatomy And Easy To Comprehend Descriptions Of Surgical Techniques As They Relate To Gynecologic Surgery. The Abundant And Colorful Illustrations Are Complemented By Concise Text To Fulfill The Authors' Objectives.
audience:it Is Primarily Directed Toward Those Practicing Or Learning Gynecologic Pelvic Surgery. It Would Be Of Great Benefit To Medical Students, Residents, Fellows, General Gynecologists, And Subspecialists As Both A Primary Learning Tool Or As A Reference Book. In Addition To The Two Primary Authors, Who Are Professors Of Obstetrics And Gynecology At The University Of Cincinnati School Of Medicine, Over 15 Other Physicians Who Practice Pelvic Surgery As Generalists Or Subspecialists Are Contributors.
features:this Edition Is Considerably More Comprehensive Than The First Edition. In Addition To An Improved Introduction To Pelvic Anatomy And A New Chapter On Surgical Instrumentation, New Sections Cover Breast, Bowel, Ovarian Cancer Debulking, And Endoscopic Procedures. Most Common Procedures In General Gynecology And Urogynecology Are Covered In Appropriate Detail With Emphasis On Anatomic Relationships And Surgical Technique. The Book Is Logically Organized By Surgical Approach (i.e., Abdominal, Vaginal, Or Endoscopic Approach). There Are Even Sections On Cesarean Section, Repair Of Perineal Lacerations, And Gender Reassignment Surgery. Most Of The Illustrations Are In Full Color. Unlike Most Anatomic Atlases, The Authors Use A Balance Of Photographs From Inside The Operating Room And From Both Fixed And Fresh Cadavers In Conjunction With Beautiful, Realistic Drawings To Demonstrate The Anatomic Relationships Relevant To Various Surgical Dissections. Many Of The Endoscopic Photographs Are Dark, Making The Anatomic Relationships More Difficult To Appreciate. This Observation Is Attributable, However, To The Inherent Drawbacks Of Fixed Endoscopic Photographs. The Minimalist Text In The Atlas Is Appropriate And Complements The Illustrations Well.
assessment:this Second Edition Is A Much More Comprehensive Work Than The First Edition. The New Sections Justify The Second Edition, And The Atlas Would Be Of Great Use To Any Resident Or Fellow In Gynecology. It Is The Variety Of Illustrations And Complementary Text That Help This Book Stand Out. While Many Anatomic Atlases And Textbooks Demonstrate Pelvic Anatomy And/or Describe Surgical Procedures Pertinent To The Gynecologic Surgeon, None Marry The Anatomy And The Descriptions Of Procedures In Such A Complementary, Easy To Comprehend Manner.
