Synopsis
The "rhetoric" of silence can be used for purposes of obedience or resistance and can be seen as a form of eloquence, suggests Luckyj (English, Dalhousie U., Canada). She explores how silence was used by masculinist philosophical traditions of early modern England to advance a particular gender politics. She then looks at how this politics was reflected in contemporary playtexts before turning her attention to women writers of the period who exploited silence to their own ends.
