Synopsis
This book is a history of the Borromeo family of the Philippines, with emphasis on the author's maternal ancestors in Cebu City. The Borromeo family settled in Old Parian in 1819. They came from the neighboring island of Negros, and are related to the Borromeo family branches of Negros, Panay (Iloilo City) and Luzon (Cavite City). Carlos "Capitan Aro" Borromeo settled in Cavite City in 1744 and became a local Gobernadorcillo working directly with the Mayor of Cavite. Osvaldo Vitaliani of Bolzano-Bozen in the South Tyrol / Alto-Adige kindly provided historical information on his own Vitaliani-Borromeo ancestors of Padua, Naples and Milano in Italy going back to A.D. 66. Branches of the Italian Borromeo family settled in Corsica, France (Latin spelling of "Borromei"), in Brazil (Portuguese spelling of "Borromeu"), in Argentina (where more than half the population claims Italian ancestry) and even in the City of Prague in former Austrian Bohemia (where the Roman Catholic Archbishop Carolus Borromeo Schwartz served the Church). Small numbers of Europeans and even North Americans began settling in the Philippines soon after the arrival of the Spaniards in 1521.
