On The 1st Of June, At The Time Of The Publication Of The Last Number Of The Chronicle, We Spoke Of The Apportionment Bill, The Remedial Justice Bill, The Proposed Tariffs On Imports, And The Naval And Military Appropriation Bills, As Still Awaiting The Action Of Congress, Although Each Of Them Had Occupied The Attention Of That Body. The First Of These Subjects Only, Was So Far Matured As To Become A Law During The Past Month. The Senate, After A Long Discussion Of The Apportionment Bill, (see P. 240, ) Amended It In Its Most Important Feature, Raising The Ratio From 50,179, At Which Number The House Had Fixed It, To 70,650, Thus Reducing The Proposed Number Of Representatives To 223. The Bill Was Also Amended In The Senate By The Addition Of A Clause Granting An Additional Member To Each State Whose Population Is Such That, After The Regular Process Of Apportionment Had Been Made, There Is A Remainder Larger Than One Half The Ratio.
