Synopsis
De Lisser (1878-1944) Was A Jamaican Journalist And Author Who Has Been Called One Of The Most Conspicuous Figures In The History Of West Indian Literature. At 17 He Joined The Jamaica Daily Gleaner, Of Which His Father Was Editor, As A Proofreader And Two Years Later Became A Reporter On The Jamaica Times. By 1904 He Had Himself Become Editor Of The Gleaner, Writing Several Articles For The Paper Every Day. In 1909 He Published A Collection Of Essays And Within A Few Years Was Producing A Non-fiction Work Or Novel Annually. His First Novel, Jane: A Story Of Jamaica (1913) Is Significant For Being The First West Indian Novel To Have A Central Black Character. Susan Proudleigh Was First Published In Book Form In 1915, Having Previously Been Serialised In The Daily Gleaner As Susan: Mr Proudleigh's Daughter.
