At the end of the Second World War the German economy had to all appearances been shattered. A mere ten years later, however, West Germany had not only recovered to its pre-war level, but had exceeded it in terms of the most important economic indicators. This concise overview of the vital reconstruction years argues that, far from being shattered by Allied bombs, the German economy was in a fundamentally healthy position at the end of the war and had increased its industrial capacity enormously.
