Underlying these narratives are two core mythologies often shared by different faiths. The first is a belief that the real world is immaterial, is populated by a deity or deities, hosts of acolytes or demons, and that this world of ours is a mere shadow.

The second of these myths reveals itself in magical thinking, miracles and divine activities free from physical causation. This exposes a desire to transcend physical and material limitations to find fulfilment of wishes and desires, as well as to escape from fears of failure or death.

Now retired, Ralph Robinson continued to teach philosophy part-time until turning to writing in recent years. The author spent five years in theological training, ten years in Christian ministry, and taught philosophy at the University of Newcastle, Australia, for thirty years. I view the book as a repayment of a debt to my past, and an explanation of a process leading out of once-treasured beliefs and commitments into a richer and more fulfilling world view.
