In 1953, Rodney Garland's The Heart in Exile was published, marking the first time a gay sleuth was featured in a novel. Although nearly ten years would pass before another figure of this kind would appear in print, such characters have increased significantly in the years since. In The Gay Male Sleuth in Print and Film: A History and Annotated Bibliography, scholar Drewey Wayne Gunn provides a context for this subgenre by examining the history of the gay male sleuth from his beginnings in The Heart in Exile through the pulp novels of the 1960s and 1970s and into mainstream works of the twenty-first century.
